I’m a grown man and I’ve just spent time cutting out teeth to create this photo of a laptop eating an iPad.
I need to get a life.
Anyway, writing machines, which is best?
I love both and I did give my iPad an honest go of being my go-to scribing tablet but it didn’t quite cut the mustard.
It has no keyboard, so I bought an external one. That does improve things but my main issue was the lack of cursor. Touching the screen to direct the cursor meant my fingers weren’t near the keyboard which was a little weird. Using the arrow keys is another solution but a very clicky one especially if you’ve got to go back a few paragraphs and delete a sentence.
An external keyboard also means your singular, sleek slice of serenity is now a two-piece. If I wanted a two-piece I’d grab a notebook and pen. I’m too high-tec for that kind of malarkey.
My old PC laptop was dying so I gave the iPad a go but couldn’t get settled for the above reasons and let my wandering eye head over towards the laptops on eBay. I ended up going for the Macbook Air because it’s very small and light which is ideal for writing out and about, has a decent battery life (about 5 hrs) and a solid state drive which means it won’t heat up, burn your lap and then crash losing everything you’ve just written.
The iPad did introduce me to Dropbox and allow me to search eBay to find it’s writing replacement whilst I watched TOWIE. The Macbook Air is not cheap (£850) but you can find some decent second-hand ones. I picked mine up for about £550 after a month of monitoring bids and finding out more about the different versions on offer.
Meanwhile, I still use my iPad everyday. I find it better as a consumption tool; using Twitter, browsing the internet, searching eBay, using other apps and it’s also got me playing games which is not something I’ve done in years (since Abe’s Oddysee, I miss that little guy!).
In conclusion, the iPad and laptops are both great but laptops are better for writing.
Says me.

Take from this what you must.
